An early own goal from midfielder Scott Caldwell threatened to put a damper on New England's playoff hopes, as the team had a very difficult time breaking down United's defense in the first half,
“It was a great effort,” Revolution defender Chris Tierney told Goal. "We obviously did not start the game well and obviously conceded a bad goal, but after that I thought we had the better of the play. I think at the end, we deserved to win the game.”
The difference in the second half was a much more cohesive effort from New England offensively. Nguyen and fellow midfielder Kelyn Rowe caused much concern for United, finally creating chances behind the bunkered visting defense.
The Revolution's improved effort was rewarded. Nguyen earned a questionable penalty kick in the 56th minute on a tackle from Dejan Jakovic. But the midfielder was denied by goalkeeper Bill Hamid.
Just two minutes later, Fagundez found space behind the United backline and leveled the score despite it looking as though the forward was possibly offside.
In the 68th minute Nguyen had a shot from 25 yard out that beat Hamid, but hit the woodwork and stayed out.
New England found the breakthrough in the 83rd minute, as the club earned another penalty. Nguyen surprisingly stepped up and took the spot kick, this time converting to take the lead,
“Again, I think that was another gutsy performance from (Lee Nguyen) because those are not easy," stated New England coach Jay Heaps. "You’re talking about a guy who has missed a couple of PK’s in his career. Those are tougher than own goals, because own goals aren’t really your fault. PK’s are tough to come back from and I thought Lee stepped up and really delivered.”
With the victory putting New England back into playoff position, next weekend's matchup against the Houston Dynamo could have quite the importance. The Eastern Conference foes are currently in fourth and fifth respectively,
“They beat us at home here and we beat them at their place,” stated Tierney. “It's a team we know really well. They are a big physical team and it's going to be a big test for us, but we are confident that if we are playing to our peak ability at home then we have a good chance at three points.”
