Houston Dynamo 2-1 Arabe Unido: Weaver brace puts club atop Champions League group

Cam Weaver converted a pair of crosses to give the home side a come-from-behind victory over its Panamanian visitors.

Cam Weaver has found minutes hard to come by for the Houston Dynamo in MLS this season, but the big forward made the most of his opportunity Tuesday in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Weaver, who has logged just 363 minutes in league play, bagged a brace as the Dynamo moved atop Group 1 with a 2-1 win over Panamanian side Arabe Unido at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Houston coach Dominic Kinnear deployed a reserve-heavy lineup with Houston in the thick of a playoff race, though regulars Tally Hall, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe and Adam Moffat did get the nod along with recently signed playmaker Alexander Lopez.

The visitors took an eighth-minute lead in controversial fashion, with Abdiel Arroyo drawing a penalty kick on Dynamo right back Mike Chabala by going down with minimal contact, then converting from the spot.

After Hall stoned an Humberto Ward breakaway to keep it a one-goal game, Houston tied the match in the 22nd minute. Running onto Ashe's cross from the left flank, Weaver sneaked between two defenders and hammered home a low, one-time volley from close range.

As the second half wore on, Arabe Unido increasingly turned to time-wasting in an attempt to grind out a point on the road. But Dynamo substitute Brad Davis made his mark in the 76th minute, floating a cross to the far post that Weaver nodded home to put Houston in front.

Houston (1-0-1) returns to Champions League action Sept. 25 when it hosts W Connection of Trinidad & Tobago.
