D.C. United releases young DP Rafael

It was a short stint in the nation's capital for United's latest Designated Player, who departs after playing just seven games.
D.C. United and Brazilian forward Rafael announced that the two have mutually agreed to terminate his contract.

The 20-year-old forward was originally signed as a young Designated Player in January of 2013. He appeared in seven matches (four starts) this season, scoring one goal.

In a Q&A on the team's official website, United GM Dave Kasper said: “We thought he would be further along at this point of the season in his adaptation and development."

He continued: "Casey Townsend has come into the picture recently with solid play, and Rafa lost playing time as a result. We did not see this changing. In the end, with a looming decision on a big transfer payment for a player on loan, we felt it would be wiser to look to invest funds toward players elsewhere.”
