Colorado Rapids 1-2 San Jose Earthquakes: Mark Watson wins first game as head coach

San Jose came out to make a statement with new coach and new spark to work their way back up the ranks in the Western Conference.

The San Jose Earthquakes won their first match with Mark Watson as the coach, beating the Colorado Rapids, 2-1.

The original Bash Brothers - Alan Gordon, Steven Lenhart and Chris Wondolowski - were both back in the starting XI, and were quick to impress. In the 11th minute, Gordon passed the ball to Lenhart. The 26-year old trapped it at the top of the box, then sent a rocket past two Rapids defenders and goalkeeper Clint Irwin into the net to gave the Earthquakes an early lead.

Gordon was on the jumbotron yet again in the 18th minute when he was on the receiving end of a hard foul from Atiba Harris. The Rapids forward was shown the red card, which left the hosting side down a man for the majority of the match.

In the second half, Sam Cronin doubled the lead when he chipped home after Rafael Baca picked out his overlapping run.

By the 65th minute, the Rapids had used up all of their subs in hopes of changing the outcome of the match. The strategy appeared to work because in the next minute, Nathan Sturgis put the Rapids on the board as he headed in a cross by Brian Mullan.

The 10-man Rapids squad put on an impressive second half, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Earthquakes from taking home three points as a souvenir from the Mile High City.
