Timbers to host Morelia in first of annual friendlies against Liga MX sides

The MLS side will host the inaugural Copa Verde, which will be an annual match for the Timbers against a Liga MX club.
The Portland Timbers will play host to Liga MX side Morelia in a July friendly, the club announced on Tuesday. It will be the first of an annual match the Timbers will play against Mexican top-flight competition in a series called the Copa Verde.

Morelia, which is closing in on a berth in the Liga MX Clausura playoffs, will play at Jeld-Wen Field on July 3. The game will come after the Timbers' bye week and four days ahead of their match against the Columbus Crew. It will also mark the beginning of a busy week at Jeld-Wen Field, which will host two CONCACAF Gold Cup group games on July 9 -- Costa Rica against Cuba, and the USA against Belize.

Part of the proceeds from the Copa Verde match will go toward Portland's Mexican Consulate and its initiative on programs and scholarships for Hispanic youth development, education and health in the city.
