The Vancouver Whitecaps fell to FC Dallas 2-0 on the road. The Canadian club has just three away wins from 21 attempts under head coach Martin Rennie.
On Saturday, the visitors fell 2-0 to FC Dallas due to a Brad Rusin own goal and a well-taken finish from Blas Perez. The game-winning goal came from a David Ferreira corner, as George John put pressure on Rusin, who lost his balance and knocked the ball into his own goal with his back.
Neither Lee Young-Pyo on the post or goalkeeper Joe Cannon were able to react in time.
“We were both going for the ball,” Rusin told reporters following the match. “I got tangled up with him and I kind of got turned and it went off my back and then it goes in the goal. It’s a bit unfortunate but those things happen.”
The goal was a cruel one for Cannon to concede given he’d made a number of fine saves in the minutes leading up to the opener.
“I thought at that point we had weathered the storm,” Cannon said. “To give them one like that, I feel bad for our guys. They fought and to have an unlucky bounce like that is demoralizing at that time and for some reason it took us awhile to react. It was definitely unfortunate.”
The Whitecaps haven’t won now in five matches, and this latest result means under head coach Martin Rennie, the club has just won three matches over his 21 road matches in charge.
“The road concerns – obviously it’s something that we need to work on,” Cannon said of the club’s horrendous away record. “It’s pretty glaring. But in all honesty, in this league, you just have to make sure you finish strong. For us, we can’t worry about results right now. We have to figure out what the heck has gone wrong with us – why aren’t we getting these results?
“Whatever we’re doing, it’s not working.”
With this result, the Whitecaps fall to 2-3-2. They play FC Edmonton on Wednesday in the Canadian Championship before once again playing FC Dallas next weekend – this time at BC Place.
“For us, I think we know we didn’t play well tonight,” Cannon said. “We can’t wait to play them [again next weekend].”
