Chivas USA's Velazquez has red card rescinded

The defender was sent off against the LA Galaxy by referee Ricardo Salazar, but replays showed that the judgment of the play in question was overly harsh.
Chivas USA was successful in appealing the red card given to defender Joaquin Velazquez in the club's draw with the LA Galaxy on Sunday, with the league announcing Tuesday that it has rescinded the card.

Velazquez will not have to serve a one-game suspension, nor will he have to pay the fine that accompanies an ejection, and he will be available for selection when Chivas faces the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park this Sunday. The panel that reviews all red card appeals consists of a representative from U.S. Soccer, the Canadian Soccer Association and the Professional Referees Organization.

Velazquez was sent off by referee Ricardo Salazar for a play in which he clashed with Galaxy winger Colin Clark as both went for a ball 40th minute of the 1-1 draw. With Clark going to ground to swipe at the ball, Velazquez entered the challenge and missed the ball. He also hardly made contact with Clark after the ball had been played even though the player's reaction suggested otherwise, and Salazar, who initially gave yellow for the challenge, went to his back pocket to send Velazquez off.

Chivas USA ended up salvaging a draw while down a man, with rookie Carlos Alvarez scoring a late equalizer to cancel out Jack McBean's go-ahead goal.
