Postponed one day due to a Colorado blizzard, the Rapids dropped their home opener to the Philadelphia Union with 2-1 loss in the bitter cold.
As fans welcomed their 2013 squad onto the field captain Pablo Mastroeni was introduced to loud applause. He wasn’t on the field for long as he had to be taken out in the ninth minute with a hamstring injury.
Nick LaBrocca made his 2013 debut subbing in for the MLS veteran.
As the players began to warm up to the game, the intensity grew. In the 19th minute Rapids rookie Deshorn Brown headed the ball towards the goal only to see the shot skillfully blocked by Jack McIrnerney.
The Union had their turn at goal from a free kick. Keon Daniel curled one over the Rapids wall, but the ball hit the post and stayed out. Minutes later the Union opened the scoring from their first corner kick of the game. Sebastien Le Toux sent a good ball in to Amobi Okugo and the 21-year-old headed the corner into the net, giving the visiting side a 1-0 lead.
The Rapids got back into the match late in the second half. In the 69th minute, Brown took the ball down the middle before sliding it out his right where halftime sub Jamie Smith curled home a left footed equalizer with a first-time hit.
McInerney put the Union back in front for just 10 minutes later, receiving a beautiful pass from Antoine Hoppenot in and slotting the ball past Matt Pickens and into the net, giving his side an early road win.
