Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 Toronto FC: 'Caps overcome DeMerit injury with Koffie goal

A pedestrian opening half, which saw the loss of Jay DeMerit to injury, paved the way for a second stanza which featured Gershon Koffie's winner.
The Vancouver Whitecaps beat Canadian rival Toronto FC, 1-0, at home in the first game of the 2013 MLS season for each team.

The main action of the first half happened within the first couple minutes. Coming down from a header, Jay DeMerit strained his left calf. He had to leave the match in the eight minute, with Brad Rusin replacing him.

At halftime former Aston Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker entered to make his Vancouver debut, replacing Kekuta Manneh.

The opening goal came on the hour mark. Lee Young-Pyo collected the loose ball after a long Andy O'Brien pass didn't connect. He played a one-two with Kenny Miller and fed a probing pass into the box. Daigo Kobayashi laid off the ball with his first touch. Gershon Koffie settled and drilled a hard low shot that beat Joe Bendik at the near post.

The lone goal finished the scoring, leaving Vancouver with all three points.
