Rapids acquire Danny Mwanga from Portland

Heading into his fourth season in MLS, the former number one overall pick joins his third team.
The Colorado Rapids have acquired forward Danny Mwanga from the Portland Timbers in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.

Mwanga, 21, was the first overall pick of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by the Philadelphia Union. He had a promising rookie season, scoring seven goals, but has only managed eight goals in his next two seasons. He was traded to Portland in June 2012.

“Danny is a young, exciting forward who has proven his ability to make an impact in MLS,” said Rapids technical director Paul Bravo. “He will be a good fit for our system and we’re looking forward to welcoming him into our squad.”

“Danny was with the Timbers for a short time, but we appreciate his contributions to the club. He was a great ambassador for the club and the sport in the community,” said Gavin Wilkinson, Timbers general manager. “It is a good opportunity for him in Colorado and we feel this move is beneficial for all involved. We wish him well.”
