The Red Bulls rewarded their ball-winning central midfielder with a new contract after a breakout first full season with the club. The New York Red Bulls announced on Tuesday that Dax McCarty has agreed to a new contract with club, locking down an important midfield cog for the forseeable future.
McCarty was a vital part of the Red Bulls last season, as his hustling and ball-winning skills helped a sometimes shaky defense. After a subpar initial first go-around with the team after being acquired from D.C. United midway through the 2011 season, the former FC Dallas standout star responded strongly in his first full year, with three goals and three assists in 34 league appearances for the team.
“We are delighted to sign Dax to an extended contract, as he is a very important player for this club,” Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh said in a statement. “As a talented, American player, Dax is part of the heart and soul of this team and we are looking forward to once again having him contribute to the Red Bulls and our campaign.”
Terms of the new pact weren't revealed per club's policy but it is very likely that Monday's trade that sent Kenny Cooper to FC Dallas opened up salary cap space for McCarty's extension. Shortly after Cooper was traded, McCarty tweeted that he had some good news to annouce the following day.
McCarty wrote from his @DaxMccarty11 account: "Hoping to bring some cheerful news to #RBNY fans tomorrow... We shall see!"
