Syamsir Alam might stay with D.C. United longer than his initial loan period, according to the midfielder.
The 20-year-old joined the MLS side from Belgian second division side C.S. Visé. Though the length of the deal wasn't revealed by the club, Alam says it will last through the 2013 season, when the club has an option to purchase his rights.
"I am absolutely delighted to join DC United on loan with the option of a permanent transfer [at the end of 2013]," Alam told Goal.com. "I am not sure about the opportunities [to play], but I will try to make my way in to get a position to play."
Both Alam and D.C. United part-owner Erick Thohir hail from Jakarta, Indonsia. Alam has played for Indonesian youth national teams through the U-23 level.
"So happy, finally D.C. United have an Indonesian player," Thohir tweeted. "Hope Alam can perform."
Prior to joining Visé, Alam played for Club Atlético Peñarol in Uruguay. Alam hopes to work his way into D.C.'s first team for the upcoming season.
"There was a long discussion between Vise and D.C. United yesterday," he said. "I was loaned for the first team."
