The Jamaican international joins the MLS Cup runner-up after six seasons in Colorado in which he scored 39 goals.

The Houston Dynamo have added a significant piece in their quest to get over the final MLS hump after falling just shy of the winners' podium in each of the last two seasons.

With Calen Carr on the recovery trail from a torn ACL suffered in the MLS Cup final and the future of veteran Brian Ching still uncertain, the Dynamo added to their forward corps by acquiring star striker Omar Cummings from the Colorado Rapids. Houston sent midfielder/defender Nathan Sturgis and allocation money to the Rapids in exchange for the dynamic Jamaican striker.

"I have always liked Omar," Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said in a team statement. "He is a good player with good pace. He is someone who knows the league well. We were in an unfortunate situation with Calen Carr's injury, but Omar is a player who can come in and help us stretch the field."

Cummings' best seasons came in 2009 and the Rapids' MLS Cup championship run in 2010 when he had campaigns of 8 goals and 12 assists, and 14 goals and three assists, respectively. He is coming off a year in which he managed six goals and two assists while enduring injuries that limited his playing time. In his six seasons with Colorado, Cummings scored 39 goals and had 27 assists.

The move signals another shift in philosophy up front for the Rapids, who did not re-sign long-time striker Conor Casey and saw him get scooped up by the Philadelphia Union in the MLS Re-Entry Draft. The club also traded for former LA Galaxy forward Edson Buddle as it seeks a new formula to return to the playoffs under second-year coach Oscar Pareja after missing out on the postseason in 2012.

"Adding allocation money gives us flexibility as we look to bring in players for 2013, and Nathan has a lot of experience and can play several positions in midfield and defense," Rapids technical director Paul Pravo said. "It is difficult to part with Omar, who has been such an important player for us since his arrival in 2007. His achievements with the Rapids will always be remembered by our organization and our fans, and we wish him the very best with the Dynamo."
