Sporting Kansas City keeps adding, signs Cameroonian defender Songo'o

The 21-year-old central defender is the club's latest signing in a week full of player transactions.
Sporting Kansas City's week of wheeling and dealing continues.

On the heels of trading for playmaker Benny Feilhaber and center back Ike Opara and re-signing MLS Defensive Player of the Year Matt Besler in the past two days, Sporting KC signed 21-year-old Cameroonian central defender Yann Songo'o on Thursday.

A former U-20 Cameroonian international with experience in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, Songo'o has brief professional experience, mostly in Spain. He came through the Deportivo la Coruña and Real Zaragoza youth systems and played with Real Zaragoza B and CE Sabadell FC in Spain's Segunda Division. He was most recently with Terecera Division side Pobla de Mafumet CF this past year.

“We had him train with us last summer and we feel he is a talented, young player with a big upside,” Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes said in a team statement. “We look forward to adding him and bolstering the depth of the team.”

Songo'o comes from a soccer family. His brother, Franck, is a winger for the Portland Timbers, and their father, Jacques, was a longtime goalkeeper for Cameroon and played in four World Cups.
