thumbnail Hello,

The 2012 MLS Defender of the Year looks set for a long-term stay at Livestrong Sporting Park.

Sporting Kansas City announced that the team has signed defender Matt Besler to a new contract. Per league policy, terms of the agreement will not be disclosed.

Besler, 25, has developed into one of the league's best defenders, and his excellent performances earned him the 2012 MLS Defender of the Year award. He was also named the team's Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season.

"Kansas City is my home. This organization is fantastic, I love all my teammates and the fans are the best around," Besler said. "My goal to help bring championships to Kansas City has never wavered and I am ecstatic to re-sign with the club."

Sporting KC originally drafted the the Overland Park, Kansas native with the 10th overall pick in the 2009 SuperDraft. Besler received his first call-up to the U.S. national team in August. He has yet to be capped.

"Matt not only developed into a very important piece of our team, but also into a strong leadership role within the group," head coach Peter Vermes said. "Obviously this was a very high priority to get done and we are very, very pleased we were able to retain him as he is a key piece to our puzzle and a great asset for the successes of our team."
