A number of high-profile names are on the list for the MLS Re-Entry Draft, but teams can negotiate with their players up to Thursday's deadline to bring them back.
Juan Pablo Angel, Conor Casey, Gonzalo Segares, Danny Califf, Julian de Guzman and Kevin Hartman are just some of the star-quality names on the Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft list that the league released Monday night.Other players of note on the list include recent Generation adidas signings such as Ike Opara, Michael Nanchoff, Corben Bone, Blair Gavin and Tony Tchani, who were all first-round MLS SuperDraft picks either in 2010 or 2011.
The draft, which is for players who are either out of contract or had their contract options declined and meet a certain requirement of MLS longevity based on age/experience, is in its third year of existence as a way to facilitate player movement within the league. The first stage will be held Dec. 7, and the second stage will be held a week later.
Players selected in the first stage must have their existing options automatically picked up or be extended a "bona fide offer" that the player can reject but still have his rights owned by the team. The second stage is more financially friendly to teams, as players can be selected and signed without the same contract stipulations. The previous two Re-Entry Drafts have resulted with more players selected in the second round. Players who go through the draft unselected become free agents, able to sign with any team.
Teams have the right to negotiate with the players they have initially put on the Re-Entry list, meaning that some of that high-profile players who are presently on the list may wind up returning to their clubs. Houston's Bobby Boswell was in that position last season before returning to the MLS Cup runner-up and being a vital part of the club's run to the final.
