San Jose will end with the best record in MLS in 2012, a sharp turnaround from failing to make the playoffs last year.
San Jose doesn't play until Sunday, when it welcomes incumbent Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup champions, the LA Galaxy, but results elsewhere handed the Earthquakes the trophy.
Sporting Kansas City was the last remaining team with a chance of overhauling San Jose's 64 points, but a 0-0 draw with the New York Red Bulls made that scenario mathematically impossible, with one game remaining in the regular season.
Sunday, before the Galaxy game, the Earthquakes will break ground on a new 18,000-seater stadium, which will cap a positive weekend for the club.
Last season, Frank Yallop's squad failed to make the playoffs, posting a 8-12-14 record. San Jose last won the regular season in 2005.
