The MLS leading goalscorer said his team's closeness off the field translates into success on it.To say the San Jose Earthquakes are doing pretty well this year is an understatement. With 64 points, 69 goals, and three of their players with double digit goals, the Quakes have all but locked up the MLS Supporters' Shield.
So what is the Quakes’ secret? It’s easy. They are buddies.
"We love each other in this locker room. We actually have a blast. We joke around, we mess around," Chris Wondolowski said to Goal.com. “I really think it just flows out onto the field."
The camaraderie takes on a different look once the team suits up. Prepared for battle, the friendship becomes motivation to win.
“Once we step on the field, we all know that we are going to take it serious, but that respect and love that we have for each other; when you see that person, it makes you want to fight extra hard,” Wondolowski said.
That fighting mentality has given San Jose Earthquakes 13 extra points from scoring nine goals in stoppage time this season. “It makes you give that extra 10 percent even in the 90th minute,” explained Wondolowski.
“I think that’s also one of the reasons we have had a couple comebacks now. We look over and see each other, and you want to give that extra effort and try to make the most of it.”
Wondolowski and his buddies plan on finishing the regular season strong when they host the LA Galaxy Oct. 21 at Buck Shaw Stadium, before finishing at Portland on Oct. 27.
