Frings to undergo season-ending surgery

The Toronto FC captain has been contending with a hip injury that will keep him out of the rest of the 2012 campaign.

Torsten Frings will miss the remainer of the 2012 season due to arthroscopic surgery on his hip, Toronto FC announced Wednesday.

The 35-year-old TFC captain and former German international has missed two of the past three games with injury, and Toronto coach Paul Mariner said over the weekend that Frings had travelled to Munich to have his hip checked out by doctors there.

Since joining the Reds last year, Frings has appeared in 33 league matches for the struggling side, scoring twice and adding three assists. He has also featured in several Canadian Championship and CONCACAF Champions League matches for TFC, helping the club to its fourth consecutive Voyageurs Cup title in May and leading the side to the CCL semifinal last March.

Frings is expected to rejoin Toronto in time for preseason in early 2013.
