In a rare goalkeeper for goalkeeper swap, the Montreal Impact have traded starter Donovan Ricketts for Portland Timbers goalkeeper Troy Perkins. Two former MLS Goalkeeper of the Year winners are on the move.
The Montreal Impact have acquired goalkeeper Troy Perkins from the Portland Timbers in exchange for the Canadian club’s own starting goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.
Montreal becomes Perkins’ third MLS club after two spells with D.C. United before moving to the Timbers after the 2010 season. The 31 year old was the league’s top goalkeeper in 2006 and enjoyed a spell with Norwegian club Vålerenga IF in between his spells with United.
"We are happy to be able to add Troy to our group and we think he will make an immediate impact in what we are trying to achieve," said Impact head coach Jesse Marsch in a club statement. "We feel this will help us make a strong push at the end of this year, as well as solidify ourselves for the future.”
Perkins has a record of 5-11-5 this season, while 2010 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Ricketts has a record of 9-11-3.
Ricketts came to Montreal in a trade from MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy, but the 35-year-old never seemed to find his form with the expansion club.
"We would like to thank Donovan for his services with the Impact but we did not feel he fit into our plans moving forward," Impact sporting director Nick De Santis said in the statement.
