The diminutive playmaker became a fan favorite at BMO Field, but fell out of favor recently.Toronto FC has announced that the club has loaned midfielder Joao Plata to LDU Quito for six months. The club said it anticipates Plata returning to Canada for the 2013 season.
The 20-year-old made a big impact during his rookie season in 2011, scoring three goals and adding five assists in league play, while also contributing big goals in the CONCACAF Champions League. In 2012 however, the Ecuadorian has fallen out of favor, making 10 appearances with zero goals.
Recently, Plata has ruffled feathers in Toronto by publicly expressing his intention to return to the club in his home country before any deal was completed. The 5-foot-2 midfielder began his career with LDU Quito before being selected by TFC with the 49th overall pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft.
