The Montreal Impact further bolstered its back line with the signing of the 21-year-old Swiss defender and former FC Basel youth product on Wednesday.
MONTREAL – After signing Alessandro Nesta last week, the Montreal Impact continued to strengthen its ailing defence on Wednesday with the signing of former Swiss youth international Dennis Iapichino. The club got a look at the defender while he was on trial in June.
“We’re very happy and excited to add a young player like Dennis to our roster,” said Impact sporting director Nick De Santis via a club press release. “At his age, he’s already played a lot of professional games at a high level and we feel that he can settle right away in MLS like Felipe, Andrew Wenger and Zarek Valentin.
“It’s tough to find left sided players and his technique and abilities are very good. We have a great nucleus of young players that could eventually be the future of this team.”
Iapichino developed at the FC Basel youth academy and was loaned out to FC Biel-Bienne and most recently to FC Lugano where he played with current Impact midfielder Felipe. The Brazilian played a big part in convincing Iapichino to join the expansion side.
As per MLS regulations, details of the deal have not been released, but the 21-year-old left back will see out the remainder of the season with the Impact and will have an option to renew for next year as well.
Head coach Jesse Marsch admitted to reporters following Wednesday’s training session that Iapichino may feature in Montreal’s next game away to the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.
