Red Bulls aim to add offensive player into DP mix

Manager Hans Backe talked up the possibility of adding a third designated player in order to bolster his team's attack.
The New York Red Bulls are close to welcoming a new impact signing according to manager Hans Backe.

The Swedish manager told reporters that the team is looking to improve its situation up front, as it deals with having just four registered attackers on the roster.

"The target of course is to get one quality guy up front," Backe said. "[If we] trade for one or buy one from Europe, we don't know yet."

Backe also made clear the fact that despite the team's thinning ranks at forward, he is in no rush to complete the signing.

"It's always difficult to finish personal terms," he said. "That takes time."

French striker Thierry Henry has been battling injuries this season, while former player Luke Rodgers' potential re-signing is still in limbo due to visa issues.

Currently, Backe can only call upon Henry, Kenny Cooper, Jhonny Arteaga and Jose Angulo to play forward for the Red Bulls.

With Henry and Mexican defender Rafael Marquez already on the books, New York has been without a third DP since German goalkeeper Frank Rost retired earlier this year. has a new podcast!
