An early penalty and solid defensive play helped Houston top San Jose on Saturday night.
The Dynamo took the lead in the 14th minute after referee Chris Penso whistled a penalty following a collision between the Earthquakes’ Jon Busch and Victor Bernardez and Houston’s Brian Ching. Busch guessed the right way on the penalty attempt, but Davis put enough power on his shot to put it in the back of the net.
Both sides lacked any real rhythm for the remainder of the first half. The Earthquakes had the better of the chances, but could only manage one shot on target.
The Earthquakes saw far more of the ball and many more chances in the second half. However, they failed to seriously test Tally Hall in the Houston goal despite looks for Chris Wondolowski, Steven Lenhart, Marvin Chavez and Shea Salinas. Offseason signings Sercan Guvenisik and Tressor Moreno also came off the bench to make their debuts for the home side, but could not help find the goal necessary to claim a point.
