Sporting Kansas City has announced that midfielder Graham Zusi has signed a new contract with the club.

Zusi, 25, enjoyed a breakout season in 2011, scoring five goals and adding nine assists in 35 appearances, including postseason. He is known as one of the most creative midfielders in the league and a set piece specialist.

“I am thrilled to stay with Sporting Kansas City,” Zusi said. “The culture, fans, atmosphere and organization are top-notch and our objectives are the same, to win championships. I know we will all work hard on and off the field and commit ourselves to reach our goals.”

Zusi's play in 2011 earned him his first call up to the U.S. national team this winter, and he started his first two matches with the team in January. He scored the lone goal in the team's 1-0 win at Panama on Jan. 25.

“Zeus (Zusi) had a very good year last year and we feel that his best is still yet to come,” Sporting Kansas City head coach Peter Vermes said.

“His intangibles on the field, matched with his competitiveness, are a great fit for our team and re-signing him was a priority this off-season.”
