D.C. United announced Monday that it had completed the signing of 30-year-old midfielder Marcelo Saragosa. Per league and club policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are pleased to have concluded a deal to bring Marcelo to D.C.,” said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. “He is well-acquainted with our League and brings additional depth to a midfield that we feel is already one of the best in the League. We look forward to his contributions to our team.”

Saragosa started his career in his native Brazil before moving to the Los Angeles Galaxy on loan in 2004 and permanently in 2005. His time in MLS also saw him play FC Dallas and Chivas USA, and he totaled 106 appearances, two goals, and six assists during his time in the league. After the 2010 season, his option was declined by Chivas USA and he opted to move to Azerbaijan, where he played two seasons, first with FC Absheron and then with Ravan Baku.

Also on Monday, United announced that it had sent an international roster spot to the Portland Timbers in exchange for allocation money. The spot will return to D.C. following the 2013 season.
