Portland Timbers pick up U.S. youth international Charles Renken off waivers

Renken, 18, joined MLS from Hoffenheim and Portland picked up the midfielder's rights, shortly after announcing the signing of Scottish striker Kris Boyd.
The Portland Timbers acquired Charles Renken from MLS waivers, the club announced Tuesday. The U.S. youth international midfielder most recently played for Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

“While only 18, Charles is a talented player who is already accustomed to the professional environment,” said Timbers assistant coach Amos Magee. “We believe he will further flourish with the Timbers.”

Renken was called up to the most recent U.S. U-23 camp in Germany last fall, and played 10 games for Hoffenheim's U-19 squad last season.
