The New York Red Bulls announced Monday that they have completed the signing of Colombian defender Wilman Conde, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. Conde was out of contract following the expiration of his deal with Mexican club Atlas, but his MLS rights were still held by the Chicago Fire. New York obtained the rights in exchange for an undisclosed amount of allocation money.
"One of our offseason priorities was to solidify our defense and adding Wilman certainly does that," said Red Bulls General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler. "During his stint in Major League Soccer, Wilman quickly established himself as one of the League’s top defenders and he will play an immediate role in our back line. He is strong, physical and experienced and he will be a tremendous addition to our club."
After leaving MLS to join Atlas, Conde saw limited playing time in Mexico, largely to to injury, making 13 appearances and scoring two goals in his year-and-a-half tenure there.
Prior to his time in Mexico, Conde spent over three seasons in MLS with Chicago, playing 73 games, scoring four goals and adding another four assists. While Conde was with Chicago, from 2007-2010, the team made three playoff appearances and Conde was named to the 2009 MLS Best XI.
