David Beckham has rejoined the LA Galaxy on a new contract that is set to run through the 2013 MLS season. The club announced the deal on its official website on Wednesday.
"This was an important decision for me," Beckham said. "I've seen first hand how popular soccer is now in the States and I'm as committed as ever to growing the game here."
Beckham's original five-year contract with the team expired on Dec. 31. The 36-year-old midfielder was linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain and multiple English Premier League clubs, but he ultimately decided it would be best for his family to remain in California.
"My family and I are incredibly happy and settled in America and we look forward to spending many more years here," Beckham said.
The Galaxy's management had announced earlier this month that the club was working on a new contract to keep Beckham in MLS. Since then, his return has been all but a certainty.
"I am thrilled that David has chosen to rejoin the Galaxy, especially as he had numerous options where he could continue his career," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said.
Beckham's new contract will begin in March. The Galaxy will be looking to win their second straight MLS Cup after defeating the Houston Dynamo in the championship game last November.
"I felt that [Beckham] was one of the best players in all of MLS last season and we could not have achieved the success that we did without him," Arena said. "We look forward to trying to replicate that success this season with David once again in a Galaxy uniform."
In 74 career regular season games with the Galaxy, Beckham has 31 assists to go along with 11 goals. Additionally, the former England captain has helped lead the Galaxy to the postseason in each of the last three seasons, tallying seven assists in 11 playoff games.
