The Chicago Fire announced the retirement of goalkeeper Jon Conway Tuesday, bringing an end to a 12-year MLS career.
“After talking to Coach Arena about the opportunity in LA and evaluating my options, it just felt like a good time to transition out of the game,” said Conway, who was selected by the Galaxy in last month's Re-Entry Draft.
“It’s been a pleasure to witness the growth of the sport and the league in the United States. I’d like to thank everyone who’s been a part of it, my teammates, my coaches, the fans and especially my family for supporting me throughout the years," Conway said.
Conway entered the league in 2000 with the San Jose Earthquakes, where he was a member of the 2001 and 2003 MLS Cup championship sides.
In 2005, Conway was traded to the New York Red Bulls. From 2006-2009, he appeared in 69 matches with the club, posting a 1.34 goals against average. Conway spent 2009 with Chivas USA and 2010 with Toronto FC before being acquired by the Fire in 2011.
“Jon Conway is a professional in every sense of the word,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “Jon provided a veteran presence in our locker room and on the field. We wish him all the best in the next step of his career.”
