The Chicago Fire have announced the signing of Colombian midfielder Rafael Robayo from Millonarios in the player's native country. The move will be finalized upon receipt of an international transfer certificated and P1 visa.
“Rafael Robayo has an excellent work rate, good defensive energy and will provide support on both sides of the ball,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “Rafael is a sizable player who can get in and create around the box. He will join our core group in preseason camp as we continue to build toward the 2012 campaign.”
The 27-year-old has spent most of career at Millonarios, and since joining in 2005, he has made 187 appearances, scoring 20 goals. He was also Millonarios' captain and helped the team to victory in the 2011 Copa Colombia and the semifinals of the 2007 Copa Sudamericana. Prior to his time at Millonarios, Robayo played for Atletico Nacional and Once Caldas, but featured infrequently
Robayo earned his first and only cap so far for Colombia in 2010, making a substitute appearance in a 2-0 friendly win at Venezuela.
