The San Jose Earthquakes announced they have acquired Honduran international defender Victor Bernardez pending receipt of his P-1 Visa. Per league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Bernardez, 29, arrives from Belgian side Anderlecht, where he spent three seasons. He appeared in 22 matches for Anderlecht before spending 2011 on loan with Lierse SK (Belgium) and Indios (Mexico).
“We’ve scouted Victor for several years,” said Earthquakes general manager John Doyle. “We saw him play at the CONCACAF Gold Cup and were very impressed with his game. He’s a great addition to the off season moves we’ve made so far and we look forward to having him in San Jose.”
The 6-foot-2 central defender has been capped 52 times by Honduras, and represented his country at the 2010 World Cup. He also started all five matches for Los Catrachos in the 2011 Gold Cup.
“Victor gives us another quality player in the center of our defense,” said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. “He’s a big, tough and athletic defender who can also play well with his feet and distribute the ball. We’re excited to have him on the squad next season.”
