Lee Nguyen is finally headed to Major League Soccer after being grabbed by the Vancouver Whitecaps in a weighted lottery.

“We’re very excited to add a talented player like Lee,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie. “He’s a young player with a bright future. We look forward to seeing him in preseason."

The former USA Under-23 star was a highly prized prospect in his youth days with the Dallas Texans but decided to head to Europe early rather than playing in the domestic league. A stint with PSV Eindhoven didn't pan out and Nguyen moved to Randers FC in Denmark for a year before moving on to Hoàng Anh Gia Lai in the V-League in 2009.

The attacker's time with Hoàng Anh Gia Lai was well spent as he became a viable attacking option for the club before taking yet another move to Becamex Bình Dương where his playing time was once again limited.

The Richardson, Texas, native signed with MLS on Dec. 7 as a free agent and it was announced that the Vancouver Whitecaps had won his rights, adding some attacking flair to the expansion MLS team's roster.

“I’m really excited to be joining Whitecaps FC and to help this club push forward,” said Nguyen. “I can’t wait to get the season started.”

Nguyen has also represented the USA at the full international level, registering three caps, but hasn't seen any action since the 2007 Gold Cup.
