The Portland Timbers announced Monday on their website that they had signed goalkeeper Troy Perkins and David Horst to new contracts. Additionally, they exercised contract options for 16 players.

Perkins, the 2006 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, established himself as the Timbers' starting goalkeeper and made 29 starts for the expansion side, recording 9 shutouts.

Horst, 26, played in 16 games for the Timbers in 2011, making 11 starts.

In addition to picking up 16 players' options, the Timbers declined to exercise the options of goalkeeper Adin Brown, defender Kevin Goldthwaite, midfielders Rodrigo Lopez, Peter Lowry, Ryan Pore and forwards Spencer Thompson and Brian Umony.

Just prior to the announcement, Goldthwaite, 28, had announced his retirement from professional soccer. He featured in 91 matches over seven years for five different teams, collecting four goals and five assists along the way.

"After a long, unbelievable journey, I have decided to call it a career," he told the team's website. "I am happy that when I look back on my career, I have zero regrets. I would like to thank all the fans in Portland and all the other cities I was lucky enough to play in for everything they have done in supporting me and my teammates."

The moves bring Portland's roster down to 22 players.
