Red Bulls midfielder Joel Lindpere scores game tying goal against San Jose, overcomes competition for Player of the Week
While he might not be American, he will certainly enjoy celebrating the holidays with an ice cold goal.com achievement. The Estonian midfielder and reigning MVP Red Bulls team MVP scored two goals on the night against San Jose who was playing host at the nearby Stanford Stadium in Stanford, California. While the Earthquakes did get to enjoy a club record 41,028 in attendance for the match, they saw their hopes of a victory disappear in front of them with a late equalizing goal courtesy of Lindpere.
Goal.com's Earthquakes correspondent Nicholas Rosano left the game as impressed as everyone else who attended. This made the POTW decision easy for Rosano, stating "Lindpere was the most dangerous player on the pitch on Saturday evening against the Earthquakes. He scored two goals en route to securing a 2-2 away draw, and although both had an element of luck to them, they were ample reward for an evening of tireless effort and consistent play."
Zac Lee Rigg came away just as impressed. Rigg feels that this game was not only an important achievement in Lindpere's career, but he could be taking the lead in other competitions as well. "Joel Lindpere continues to prove that he's the best Estonian in MLS," Rigg said. "His two goals against San Jose earned a point and lifted him so high in the best-MLS-Estonian charts that it's fair to call his competition nonexistent."
As mentioned, Brian Perk had quite a match as well in his Galaxy debut. Donovan Ricketts, the usual starting keeper for LA remains on the sidelines due to a broken forearm. Backup Josh Saunders was forced to miss the game due to a red card in the Galaxy's previous game. In stepped Brian Perk, a former draft pick of the Philadelphia Union.
All Perk managed to do was shut out a tough Seattle Sounders team, including a crucial save on a penalty kick from Fredy Montero. Both John Zielonka and Justin Churchill considered this enough to merit a nomination for Player of the Week.
Whether Perk's chances of winning the award improve remain to be seen, as Ricketts is set to return from injury within the month.
