With an eye on left back depth, the New York Red Bulls signed Mike Jones on Saturday.
The 22-year-old was selected by Sporting Kansas City in the 2011 Supplemental Draft, but released in May.
“We are excited to sign Mike, as we wanted to bring him in to see if he can provide depth to our left back position,” said Red Bull New York General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler. “We look forward to tracking his progress with us this season.”
The 6-foot-2 left footer should provide tactical flexibility to the Red Bulls roster by freeing up Roy Miller to play in the midfield should the need arise. During the Gold Cup group stages, New York had to do without Canadian international Dwayne De Rosario and had to scramble to cover all the places in midfield.
Jones will be available for Sunday's match against the Portland Timbers.
