Team happy with defense and possession, but lack of finishing cost the Revs a win.New England improved from their very disappointing performance against Chivas USA by creating a lot of possession and holding the Colorado Rapids to just one shot on net in the entire game.
However, the Revolution could not get any shots in the net. New England had three great opportunities in the game but two of the finishing shots hit the woodwork and one was saved by Rapids keeper Matt Pickens.
With the time of possession New England had, the 0-0 result is discouraging.
“The disappointing thing the amount of possession we had and the amount of balls we had,” New England coach Steve Nicol stated. Nicol's felt as if the team needed a little bit of a boost offensively “We just lacked that imagination in the final third.” said Nicol.
New England's passing was much improved over previous results in the season but the finishing was just not there.
“We need to sign someone who is more creative in the final third," Nicol said. With recent signing Rajko Lekic struggling to find service it seems as if Nicol is right.
New England defender/midfielder Chris Tierney started and went the full 90 minutes against the Rapids.
“We passed the ball better and we created chances," said Tierney. "Of course we wanted the three (points) at home, you always do. I think we probably deserved it.”
New England earned their first shutout of the season. Tierney felt that it was one of the positives to take from the match.
“At the end of the day you're happy with a clean sheet but we would have liked to score some goals,” said Tierney.
New England defender Ryan Cochrane noted the positives in the result: “Tonight was probably the best possession game we have had all year” said Cochrane. His effort on the field was superb, and he had New England's first chance of the game with his header that hit the crossbar. The central defender paired well with rookie defender A.J. Soares.
New England must take the positives from this game and use them for the rest of the season. Throughout the year the Revs have struggled to hold and pass the ball. Tonight's effort has to be promising for a team still trying to find its shape.
