SEATTLE—An hour before their season opener, the Sounders announced that the club and the former Dutch league veteran had cut their ties.
“We want to thank Blaise for his contributions to the team last season,” said general manager Adrian Hanauer. “Blaise is a quality person and we wish him nothing but the best.”
Hananuer also noted that with Nkufo’s departure, the club's salary cap situation would improve.
The 35-year-old joined the Seattle side as the team’s second Designated Player. He arrived in Seattle after his World Cup stint with the Swiss National Team. He was left unprotected in the expansion draft, but not selected by either Vancouver or Portland.
Nkufo notched five goals last year, and played in a total of 16 matches in all competitions.
