Goal.com's MLS Player Of The Week: Geovanni, San Jose Earthquakes

In his first MLS start, Geovanni also collected his first MLS goal and first MLS assist in the first time the San Jose Earthquakes have won in Houston.

Clinging to the last playoff spot, the Quakes knew they needed a result against the Dynamo. Geovanni assured that Frank Yallop's smash-and-grab tactics worked by doing most of the smashing. The Brazilian set up Khari Stephenson for the opening goal in the six minute.

Then, when Houston equalized, the former Benfica playmaker pounced on a loose ball in the box and drilled it past Pat Onstad.

One start, one goal, one assist, three points.

Nick Rosano: When you see as little possession as the Earthquakes did against Houston, you have to make efficient use of the ball when you do have it. This is exactly what Geovanni helped the Earthquakes achieve, with his goal and assist driving San Jose to win a game they probably should have lost.

Keith Hickey: This is why you sign a DP. A goal and an assist to keep his team in the playoff hunt, in a tricky game away to a strong Houston team. Geovanni came up clutch.

Ramin Majd: The Premier League washout flashed some top-division skills with a goal and an assist in San Jose's win at Houston.

Tyler G. Page: A road victory is hard to come by, even in Houston. Geovanni was involved in both San Jose goals as the Earthquakes won a critical match for the stretch run.

Giovanni Albanese Jr.:
The name speaks for itself. Oh, and the goal and assist leading directly to the 2-1 win over playoff-hopeful Houston -- on the road, no less.

Max Zeger: It has to be Geovanni. The Brazilian is clearly a class above most MLS players, and, especially with his one-on-one ability, San Jose are dark horses for MLS Cup.
