Joe Cannon broke his left ankle in training Tuesday. The San Jose Earthquakes estimate he'll miss six to eight weeks following surgery Wednesday.

The goalkeeper had only won back the starting role on Saturday, when he usurped Jon Busch to post a clean sheet against the Kansas City Wizards.

'Quakes coach Frank Yallop says the incident which caused the injury was innocuous enough.

“He’s just doing routine goalkeeping, comes out to block a shot, gets his ankle caught underneath him and snaps the ankle,” Yallop told the club's official site. “Joe’s a tough guy, but he was in a lot of pain.”

The injury means Yallop will return to Busch for the upcoming weeks of the MLS season. The former Chicago Fire net-minder started the six matches prior to the Kansas City match, conceding an average of a goal a game.

“You build a squad to hopefully deal with any problems you have,” Yallop said. “Joe played well against Kansas City, and Jon’s going to be playing now. We’ve very blessed in that position.”
