The San Jose Earthquakes announced today the signing of Jamaican international midfielder Khari Stephenson from Norwegian team Aalesunds FK. The 29-year-old, who started his professional career in the United States, will be available to play for San Jose upon receipt of his international transfer certificate and will join fellow Jamaican international Ryan Johnson on the Earthquakes' roster.
Earthquakes general manager John Doyle said in a press release, “Adding an experienced physical presence like Khari to our team is something we have been looking to do for a little while now. He brings a great touch and solid work rate to our midfield that will benefit us in our push for the playoffs and in the future.”
Stephenson was drafted 27th overall in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft by the Chicago Fire after playing college soccer at Division III Williams College. He was soon traded to the Kansas City Wizards, where he played a role in the Wizards' run to the 2004 MLS Cup final.
After a brief stint in MLS, Stephenson moved abroad, playing for top Swedish sides AIK and GAIS before moving to Aalesunds, where he helped the club to the 2009 Norwegian Cup title.
