Former U.S. U-20 and U-23 standout Sal Zizzo is on his way to Major League Soccer, ESPN is reporting.

The flankman thrived at the 2007 U-20 World Cup, earning a move to Bundesliga side Hannover 96, where fellow American Steve Cherundolo holds down the starting berth as the rightback.

However, Zizzo failed to crack into the lineup at Hannover, appearing in only eight games in his three years at the club.

Injuries haven't helped the 23-year-old either. A torn ACL undermined a loan move to Fortuna Dusseldorf in October of 2009, and Zizzo has yet to regain full fitness, though he is cleared to train.

MLS will allocate the rights to Zizzo through a weighted lottery, possibly as soon as Wednesday. D.C. United and the Kansas City Wizards stand the best chance of acquiring the winger, but every team in the league holds at least a slim chance of landing him.
