Columbus Crew 2-0 D.C. United: Schelotto Hands Crew The Win
GBS controversially wins game for Columbus.
By Steven Streff
Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored a controversial goal and Eric Brunner supplied an insurance goal for the Columbus Crew in a 2-0 victory over D.C. United Saturday night in Ohio. After United enjoyed most of the chances throughout the match, GBS gave Columbus the lead in the 57th minute, after he clearly handled the ball before coolly finishing. Brunner then struck in the 87th minute, as United failed to find the back of the net, despite their numerous opportunities.
First Half
The first half was played in three different stages, as United controlled the early portion of the match.
Chris Pontius got the party started early for United, as the young forward struck a shot on target in the first minute that was saved by William Hesmer. Youngster Andy Najar then tested Hesmer to no avail, as the Columbus keeper was able to make the save.
In the 15th minute, Adam Cristman held the ball up against several Columbus defenders, before backheeling a pass into the path of midfielder Stephen King. However, from a decent position, King was only able to put his effort over the bar.
Columbus then had their chances in a row, as they began to become more alive in the match. Chad Marshall had their first real chance in the 17th minute, but his header from a Schelotto corner was wide of the post. Eric Brunner was guilty of the same mistake minutes later, as he sent his wide open header from Schelotto's free kick wide of Troy Perkins' goal.
Emilio Renteria then had several chances from distance for Columbus, but his first shot just dipped over the bar, and his second was into the arms of Perkins.
Momentum then swung back in favor of United, as they had the majority of chances to end the half. But Pontius fired over from a good position in the box, and forced Hesmer to make a save two minutes later.
A mistake from the Columbus defense allowed Cristman in on goal, but his chip from well outside of the box landed on the roof of the net. Julius James was then guilty of sending a header wide from a corner, just before Santino Quaranta fired over the bar from the top of the box.
Second Half
The second half got off to a slow start, before Schelotto opened the scoring in the 57th minute under a cloud of controversy. Renteria chipped a shot over Perkins, but the ball hit off the post, and bounced back into play. As the ball bounced, it clearly hit the hand of Schelotto, who then controlled, firing into the roof of the net for the one goal advantage.
This forced United to push forward more but they struggled to create the same amount of chances as they had in the first half. Left back Jordan Graye had a good look on target from outside of the box, but his shot lacked the venom to beat Hesmer.
Robbie Rogers had a quiet game by his standards, but he nearly doubled Columbus' lead in the 69th minute, as he curled a shot wide of the far post on a good Columbus counterattack.
Steven Lenhart was reduced to a substitute's role, but he came on right after that shot, and nearly produced a second goal, but he flashed a header wide of the frame.
Rogers and Lenhart combined for what seemed to be the game clinching goal, but Perkins played the part of hero for United. Rogers beat his man into the box, and cut the ball back for Lenhart, who got his shot on target, only for it to be tipped over by Perkins.
In the dying moments of normal time, Brunner finally doubled Columbus' lead, as he headed in a Schelotto corner that seemed to take a slight deflection off of Lenhart. But with that, all three points were secured for Columbus, as United were unable to create any real scoring opportunities.
The last action of the match happened when Lenhart was dragged down in the box by Clyde Simms, earning a penalty for Columbus. Lenhart was the unlikely choice to take the penalty, but he stepped up, only to be turned away by Perkins, ensuring the match ended with just the two goals.
