Chivas USA announced on Friday that midfielder Paulo Nagamura has signed with the club.

The midfielder had signed with Mexican First Division club Tigres UANL, but Chivas USA was able to lure the Brazilian defensive midfielder back to Major League Soccer.  He will be eligible to play for Chivas USA, pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate, when the international transfer window opens on July 15. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“In his three seasons here, Paulo made a great impact for Chivas USA, and we’re thrilled to welcome him back,” said Chivas USA Head Coach Martín Vásquez. “He’s a talented player who will add a lot to our midfield, and he is also a strong presence in the locker room. We’re all excited to see him back in the Red-and-White stripes.”

Nagamura, 27, formed an important part of the Chivas USA teams from 2007-2009, playing 73 matches in central midfield, giving the club both a defensive presence and effective, accurate passing going forward. The Brazilian scored twice in each of his first two seasons with the team before doubling his output in 2009, scoring four times. He played every minute of all six Chivas USA playoff games in his time with the club.

“I’m thrilled to be back at Chivas USA, which I consider my home,” said Nagamura. “I hope to help the work being done by my teammates, Martín and the rest of the coaching staff this season. We’re in three different competitions this year and we have a chance to win each of those tournaments. I’m eager to get started.”

Born March 2, 1983 in São Paulo, Brazil, Nagamura began his professional career with hometown club São Paulo FC, where his youth teammates included Chivas USA midfielder Marcelo Saragosa and Real Madrid star Kaká. In 2001, Nagamura was sold to Arsenal FC of the English Premier League, where he helped lead the club to an England U-19 club championship in 2002. He joined Major League Soccer with the LA Galaxy in 2005, making 54 appearances in two seasons and helping the team to the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup in 2005 before being selected in the 2007 Expansion Draft by Toronto FC. Nagamura made just four appearances with the Canadian side before a May 2, 2007 trade brought him to Chivas USA.
