Sven Goran Eriksson Wishes New York Red Bulls Coach Hans Backe Good Luck
Sven says his former assistant is enjoying the experience in MLS.
By Alex Labidou
PARIS--Adjusting to Major League Soccer has often been difficult for European coaches to master.
There are still Los Angeles Galaxy fans that turn pale at the mention of former head coach Ruud Guilt. Going against the trend is 59 year old New York Red Bulls coach, Hans Backe. Despite having to deal with injuries all season, the Swedish coach has brought stability to the franchise and his close colleague, Ivory Coast national team manager Sven Goran Eriksson, said the coach is enjoying his time in New York.
"I speak to Hans regularly and he is very happy," said Eriksson during PUMA's African Unity Experience friendly in Paris' suburbs. "He is enjoying the experience."
Even though their recent form has been poor, losing three games in a row, Backe remains a front runner for the Coach of the Year award due to the team's drastic improvement this season. For most of the season, the team has played excellent defense and Backe's gregarious demeanor has instilled confidence in rookies center-back Tim Ream and midfielder Tony Tchani.
Eriksson hopes that Backe will continue to be successful and had a message for his former assistant coach at Manchester City and Mexico.
"Tell him I said good luck out there," Eriksson said.
