In the 34th minute of the match against the New York Red Bulls, New England Revolution goalkeeper Preston Burpo snapped his right leg.

Burpo clattered into Dane Richards as both went for the ball at the top of the box, breaking both his tibia and fibula.

Medical personnel treated the 37-year-old for five minutes on the pitch before sending him to Massachusetts General Hospital. Though official reports won't come out until tomorrow at the earliest, Burpo is likely to miss many months recovering from the horrific injury, assuming he returns at all.

Burpo has started in the Revs net this season with traditional No. 1 Matt Reis recovering from left shoulder and knee injuries. Third string Bobby Shuttleworth replaced Burpo, helping New England nab a 3-2 win over the Red Bulls.
