D.C. United 3-2 Chivas USA: D.C. Wins it Late
Carey Talley burns his former club in the 90th.
By Manuel Carrera
D.C. United hosted Chivas USA in a match of the Eastern and Western Conferences cellar-dwellers looked to get back on track. D.C. United came off an emotional win versus AC Milan, while Chivas USA welcomed their captain, Sacha Kljestan, back to the team after being culled from the United States final 23-man roster.
First Half
D.C. United began the match firing on all cylinders. In the second minute, Danny Allsopp fired a shot from close range that nearly knocked Zach Thornton over, resulting in a corner kick. Off the corner, Carey Talley, a former Goat, fired a shot that sent Thornton scrambling for a kick save. In the fourth minute, Andy Najar raced past the Chivas USA backline, only to run out of room as Thornton covered his area. Chivas USA attempted to stop the onslaught by maintaining possession and stretching the field and with through-balls into the United defense.
D.C., for their part, looked to Santino Quaranta in the midfield to serve as a conduit for their attack, but in the 16th minute, following a D.C. United build up, a Chris Pontius turnover set the stage for a 50-yard Justin Braun spring to the D.C. goal to make it 0-1 Chivas USA. Braun raced past D.C. captain Carey Talley for his fourth of the season.
In the 22nd minute, D.C. attempted to strike back as Quaranta fired on Thornton’s goal, forcing the Goats' keeper into action again. One of the targets for United was Marcelo Saragosa, a defensive midfielder who started the game at right back, while Mariano Trujillo started the game in Jonathan Bornstein's customary left back spot. The D.C. pressure finally paid off in the 26th minute after a 40-yard Rodney Wallace ball found the head of Najar in a failed offside trap. Michael Lahoud was caught out of position, validating the goal. D.C. 1-1 Chivas USA.
Following the goal, D.C. continued to pressure the Chivas USA defense by maintaining possession in the Chivas USA third of the pitch effectively. The Goats, meanwhile, attempted to go over and around the United midfield with long through-balls and play on the wings, a style that has been uncommon this season for them. At the half, D.C. were unlucky not to be up following effective possession for long stretches of the first half.
Second Half
No substitutions were wade at the half as D.C. United began the second as they ended the first. A poor Saragosa clearance gave Allsopp a wide open look that he drove toward Thornton’s goal. It was rejected by the goal post, rolled along the mouth of the goal and out of bounds in the 50th minute.
D.C. continued to pressure as Chivas USA struggled to keep possession in D.C. territory. The Goats turned to Maykel Galindo in the 67th minute to replace Jesus Padilla. Curt Onalfo countered by inserting Adam Cristman for Allsopp, who looked fatigued after a shift that saw him cover lots of territory.
In the 75th, Santino Quaranta raced past the Chivas USA defense and again forced Thornton to the pitch after firing a shot at close range that landed directly into Thornton’s arms. One minute later, a Clyde Simms cross found Cristman after deflecting of the foot of Goat’s defender Dario Delgado, making it 2-1 United.
In the 80th minute, Chivas USA responded as Maykel Galindo, returning from an ankle injury, danced past Juan Manuel Pena, Carey Talley and Jordan Graye for his first goal of the season, to tie the game at 2-2.
Following the goal, Onalfo replaced Najar with Christian Castillo. Andy Najar was a constant threat on the flank throughout the game, who effectively kept Mariano Trujillo at home defensively all night. Chivas USA responded by introducing Jose Macotelo into the game in favor of Justin Braun as the Goats looked to pressure in the final moments of the match.
In the 89th, controversy struck. as Zach Thornton saw red after the referee decided that Thornton had interfered on a Santino Quaranta goal-scoring opportunity in the penalty area. Replays showed that Quaranta was on his way down moments before contact was made. With no substitutions left, Chivas USA pressed Dario Delgado into goalkeeping duty as Carey Talley was tabbed to take the penalty, which he confidently buried as Delgado dove the wrong way to make it 3-2 in favor of D.C., marking the second win for United this season.
