Columbus Crew

Will Hesmer: 7 - Solid game between the pipes for the Crew netminder, he was quick off his line the whole game and made a nice save on Braun close to the end of regulation.

Frankie Hejduk: 6 - With Chivas attacking down the left and the middle, he did not have much to do in the first half. Was OK through the second half, but occasionally rough challenges earned him a yellow

Eric Brunner: 5.5 - Not bad in the defense, but distributed the ball very poorly and was lucky that Chivas didn’t capitalize.

Chad Marshall: 6 - Solid in the defensive aspect of his game, blocked two crucial shots, but like Brunner was not too sharp on the ball. Improved as the game went on. Did well to earn the decisive penalty.

Gino Padula: 5 - Padula looked sloppy all game long, and Chivas recognized this by constantly exploiting the Crew’s left side. His rating is saved by the two crucial goal-line clearances just two minutes apart. Replaced in the 66th minute by O’Rourke.

Eddie Gaven: 4 - Did not threaten much down the right flank and squandered a golden opportunity to set up a goal in the second half. Replaced in the 81st minute by Ekpo.

Brian Carroll: 6
- Had a fairly good game in the midfield, winning lots of balls and breaking up some of Chivas’ buildup play. His passing left something to be desired, though.

Adam Moffat: 4 - Had a very sloppy game on both ends of the field, with both his passing and defense leaving something to be desired. Did test Thornton twice from long range, though, forcing the Chivas ‘keeper into good saves.

Robbie Rogers: 5.5 - Occasionally threatened down the left side, but drifted in and out of the game. Not his best work after a great outing against New England and a World Cup training camp call-up.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto: 7
- The Argentine showed why he is the Crew’s go-to guy for offense, orchestrating the few attacks the Crew could muster with his precise passing and smooth ball control skills. He capped it all off with the winning penalty.

Steven Lenhart: 5 - Didn’t get great support and showed some nice touches, but sometimes struggled against the physical Chivas backline. Replaced in the 74th minute by Garey.

Substitutes:

Danny O'Rourke: 6 - Added some stability to the Crew backline after coming on the 66th minute.

Jason Garey: N/A - Didn’t provide the spark that the Crew offense needed, but wasn’t on the field for too long either.

Emmanuel Ekpo: N/A – Not on the field for long, though had some nice runs and touches, and earned the free kick that set up the penalty.

Chivas USA

Zach Thornton: 5.5 - - Wasn’t tested much, but made two good saves on Moffat. Perhaps could have done better on Schelotto’s penalty as he was close to the ball, but was couldn’t move to stop it.

Mariano Trujillo: 5 - Was beaten on the right side a number of times, but got it together as the match went on and offered decent support going forward.

Michael Umaña: 5.5 - Part of a solid central defensive unit, but made some unnecessarily rough plays and was very lucky not to be shown a second yellow after a blatant handball above his head in the 26th minute

Darío Delgado: 6 - No complaints here for the Costa Rican, who was strong throughout the match and shut the Crew forwards down very effectively.

Jonathan Bornstein: 6 - Absent for much of the early part of the game, but as time went on, he linked up well with the attack and had a handle on Gaven.

Ben Zemanski: 7 - An excellent performance for the rookie. Won plenty of balls in the midfield while his passing was efficient and accurate.

Blair Gavin: 4.5 – Didn’t see too much of the ball. Had the occasional good tackle and a decent shooting attempt, but his passing wasn’t great even when he did see the ball.

Michael Lahoud: 6 - His pace and mazy runs gave the Crew defense a lot to think about in the early parts of the game, though occasionally went missing later on. Replaced by Saragosa in the 83rd minute.

Jesús Padilla: 6 - Showed a great work rate and some nice touches on the ball. Troubled the Crew defense a good deal in the second half, though occasionally muscled off the ball.

Sacha Kljestan: 7.5 - Orchestrated the Chivas attack all night long with his deft touches and accurate passing showing why Bob Bradley picked him in his preliminary World Cup squad.

Justin Braun: 6 - Part of some great build-up play and linked up very nicely with Kljestan while managing to test Hesmer a few times, though could not find the net. However, his otherwise solid game was blemished when he hauled down Marshall for the winning penalty with just minutes remaining.

Substitutes:

Marcelo Saragosa: N/A - Late sub, little impact.

Chukwudi Chijindu: N/A - On in injury time.

Maicon Santos: N/A - On in injury time.
