thumbnail Hello,

D.C. United finally put three points on the board.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Danny Allsopp led the line, and Bill Hamid kept his goal as D.C. United earned their first league victory of the season with a 2-1 win over the Kansas City Wizards. Hamid was the shock inclusion to Curt Onalfo's side, but the 19 year old made several key saves in his first professional appearance. Allsopp chipped in with his first two goals for D.C. United, who exacted revenge on Kansas City, after an opening day 4-0 defeat in Kansas City. With the loss, the Wizards continued a poor run in the league, having now lost four consecutive games.

First Half

With Hamid earning his first professional start, Kansas City began testing the 19 year old early to gauge his abilities. Ryan Smith started the party by sending in a cross that bounced off Hamid with Jack Jewsbury lurking.

But while Kansas City was busy trying to work on Hamid, D.C. was using the long ball to try and work the counter attack.

It worked well in the 12th minute, when Australian striker Danny Allsopp scored his first goal for United. Rodney Wallace sent a long ball from the back for Allsopp, who collected the ball before working his way into the box.  From there, his shot took a deflection off of Jimmy Conrad past Jimmy Nielsen for United's first lead of the season.

The Wizards weren't pinned back by the goal, however, and they continued to create chances at the other end. A cross from Roger Espinoza found Chance Myers at the back post, but Hamid was there to stop the shot at a tight angle.

Espinoza then tried a spectacular effort 30 yards from goal on a bouncing ball, but his volleyed shot was parried over the bar for a corner by Hamid.

But with the flow of the game favoring Kansas City, it was D.C. who scored next, thanks again to Allsopp.  A horrific pass out of the back from Pablo Escobar was intercepted by Adam Cristman. Cristman then played in Allsopp, who took one touch before firing past Nielsen for the two goal lead.

Allsopp nearly made it three in the 41st minute, as another Wallace long ball was controlled by Cristman. Cristman then laid the ball off for Allsopp, who burst into the box before having his shot parried away by Nielsen.

Kansas City worked their best chance of the first half on the stroke of half time, as a long ball from Conrad found Santiago Hirsig in the box. Hirsig headed the ball into the path of Jewsbury, whose point-blank shot was parried out by Hamid.

Second Half

Peter Vermes made two changes early on in the second half, looking to change the game in the Kansas City's favor. Kei Kamara came on for Hirsig, and Myers made way for Teal Bunbury, as KC looked for more attacking options.

Kamara nearly made the difference early on in the half, as he was at the end of a Josh Wolff counter attacking move. But after picking up the pass and moving into the box, Kamara's effort was into the side netting.

Espinoza attempted to test Hamid again from distance, but the left back's powerful left footed shot was just over the bar.

Smith then had a errant cross that was on target, but Hamid did well to catch the ball and make sure it did not cross the line in the 60th minute.

Allsopp again had an opportunity to complete his hattrick, as he and Cristman forced a turnover deep in City's half. But after Cristman fed Allsopp the ball in the box, the striker's shot was pushed just wide by Nielsen.

Christian Castillo nearly made Nielsen pay for not putting a wall up in front of a free kick from 40 yards out. But the Salvadorian's free kick swerved into the post, saving Nielsen from the potential embarrassment.

Kansas City was able to pick up a late consolation, as Kamara found the back of the net in the second minute of stoppage time. A good passing move from the Wizards enabled Wolff to pick the ball up on the left side, and send an early cross in to the back post. Kamara free in the box, and coolly slotted the ball home.
