Forward had both goals for Galaxy
It was a cool and clear evening at the Home Depot Center with an attendance of 20,344 as the Los Angeles Galaxy took on Real Salt Lake in a much anticipated rematch of last years MLS Cup final. The Galaxy fell to RSL in a shootout; a heartbreaking event that left a bitter taste in the Galaxy's mouth. The only prescription was vengeance, and the match was marked with intensity from the opening whistle.
It was 12 minutes into the match when RSL gave up a corner kick to the Galaxy. Forward Landon Donovan placed the ball in the quarter circle as his squad stalked the 6. Donovan went far post i the delivery and found the noggin of fellow forward Edson Buddle who netted the ball to give the Galaxy the first goal of the night.
In minute 34 the Galaxy found themselves in favorable positions in the attack. Defender Sean Franklin from the left wing sent it into the penalty box for Donovan, who collided with a Salt Lake defender and went tumbling down. LA looked for the penalty, but referee Mark Geiger would not hear from it.
In the 41st minute the Galaxy were shorthanded after Franklin was fouled twice within minute and taken out of the match. While still in the process of getting the 11th man in the game, RSL threatened the Galaxy with a corner kick.
RSL midfielder Nelson Gonzalez on the corner kick sent it into the penalty box. The ball caromed off a defender to RSL midfielder and captain Kyle Beckerman, who went for goal. The ball did a funny bounce in front of Galaxy netminder Donovan Ricketts and sailed into the net to put the game back at square one with a one-all draw.
There was a scuffle in the 51st minute between Galaxy midfielder Mike Magee and Beckerman. Magee tripped him up and Beckmerman grabbed and held onto the foot of Magee, sending him tumbling. both men got up quickly and started a pushing match. Their respectful teams separated them to prevent any bookings.
In minute 65, moments after RSL forward Robbie Findley came into the match, he and the rest of RSL attacked and found themselves in the penalty box. The ball came to Findley, who tried to rifle it from 10 yards out, past Ricketts, but the ball came off the plumbing. Surely, the thud off the post was music to Ricketts' ear.
The match started to get even more physical. In the 76th minute, Brazilian sensation Juninho, fighting off a defender, passed it along to Buddle in the half circle who set it and sent a scorcher down the pipe into the net for the go-ahead goal.
Buddle's second goal was all the game wrote as the Galaxy came out victorious. They can now get the bitter taste out of their mouths and focus on continuing their bulldozing through the league.
